Projects

Three course projects from my engineering technology degree, plus one personal project.

CEIS114 · ESP32, C++ (Arduino), breadboarding, I2C LCD, MQTT

IoT Traffic Controller Light

I wired an ESP32 to two sets of traffic lights, a crosswalk button, an LCD and a buzzer, then added an emergency light I could switch on over Wi-Fi.

The real Serial Monitor output after pressing the button

Count =  9  == Walk ==
Count =  8  == Walk ==

Sped up. The project page has the full simulator and notes which parts of its timing are real. Stand-ins: the order of the light cycle, the count step, and the lights holding during the count.

Programming With Data

I wrote Python scripts that loaded two weeks of NOAA weather data into a SQLite database, queried it with SQL and charted temperature and humidity.

SELECT MIN(temperature), MAX(temperature) FROM observations;
   MIN(temperature)  MAX(temperature)
0              -3.9               8.3

NETW211 · Microsoft Azure, virtual networks, network security groups, SSH, Azure Monitor

Introduction to Cloud Computing

I deployed Windows and Ubuntu virtual machines in Microsoft Azure, split a virtual network into two subnets, and set up storage, a firewall rule and email alerts.

Select a part of the network.

NETW211-VNet-FZ
A virtual network with two /24 subnets, 10.0.0.0/24 and 10.0.1.0/24, and one VM in each.
Subnet0 and Subnet0-VM
10.0.0.0/24, with the VM at 10.0.0.4.
Subnet1 and Subnet1-VM
10.0.1.0/24, with the VM at 10.0.1.4.
NSG: AllowPing
A rule I added on my Ubuntu VM: priority 310, ICMP, next to the SSH rule at priority 300.

About me

Finley Zinser, smiling, in a green suit jacket and white shirt.

I like to tinker with electronics and hardware. I finished my Associate of Applied Science in Engineering Technology at DeVry University in 2024, where my projects covered Python and SQL, cloud computing in Microsoft Azure, and microcontroller circuits on an ESP32. I have over four years in technology and hardware, alongside hands-on electrical work, carpentry and painting. I currently work as a sales associate at Bandon Supply in Oregon, where I enjoy helping customers meet their needs. Outside work I make games and software in my spare time. I also enjoy playing guitar, skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, and taking my motorcycle out on nice days.
